At Huaze Biotech, we manufacture ginger extract from the rhizome (ginger root) of Zingiber officinale Roscoe. Our extract carries pungent compounds called gingerols; 6-gingerol is the most abundant.[1,2] In this guide, we explain what ginger extract is and how it differs from raw ginger and gingerols. We also cover its uses and what to check when you buy in bulk.
1. What Is Ginger Extract?
We make ginger extract as a concentrate of the dried ginger rhizome. We typically extract the rhizome with ethanol or water, then concentrate and standardize the actives. Unlike whole ginger or plain ginger powder, a standardized extract has a defined level of active compounds.[2] This makes dosing and formulation more consistent. Botanically, the rhizome is an underground stem, but people widely call it ginger root.
| Term | What it means |
| Ginger | The fresh rhizome of Zingiber officinale |
| Ginger root / rhizome | The raw plant part used as the source |
| Ginger powder | Dried, ground rhizome (a food/spice form) |
| Ginger extract | A concentrated, standardized botanical preparation |
Gingerols vs. Ginger Root Extract
Gingerols is a class of compounds inside ginger; ginger root extract is the product that carries them. When a buyer asks us for “gingerol”, they usually want an extract standardized to a set gingerol level. We ask you to state this specification clearly.
2. What Are Gingerols and 6-Gingerol?
Gingerols are the main pungent phenolic compounds in ginger. The principal members are 6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 10-gingerol; 6-gingerol is the most abundant and most studied.[2,3] In our lab, we measure 6-gingerol as the marker compound because it is the most plentiful and best documented.
| Gingerol | Note |
| 6-Gingerol | Most abundant, most studied |
| 8-Gingerol | Present in smaller amounts |
| 10-Gingerol | Present in smaller amounts |
How much gingerol is in ginger? Levels vary with variety, origin, drying state, processing, and analytical method. A single universal figure is misleading. We therefore advise buyers to specify a standardized total-gingerols or 6-gingerol content.[2]
3. Gingerols vs. Shogaols: What’s the Difference?
Gingerols occur naturally in fresh ginger. During drying or heating, gingerols can lose water and convert into shogaols, including 6-shogaol.[3] They are different compounds with different stability and activity profiles. Neither is simply “better”; the preferred profile depends on the raw material, processing, and application. From our production experience, heat-processed or dried material contains more shogaols. Tell us which profile you need.
4. Benefits and Applications of Ginger Extract
Potential Benefits
Ginger has a long tradition of use for mild digestive complaints such as bloating. People also use it for motion sickness and minor joint discomfort. Researchers have studied 6-gingerol for antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.[1,4] We present these statements as traditional use and research, not medical claims.
Applications
| Application | Examples |
| Dietary supplements | Capsules, tablets |
| Functional foods & beverages | Drinks, foods |
| Powder formulations | Standardized extract powders |
| Cosmetics & personal care | Skin and hair formulations |
5. How to Choose a Ginger Extract Supplier?
Gingerol specification — total gingerols and 6-gingerol. An extraction ratio (e.g., 10:1 or 20:1) describes raw-material concentration, not gingerol content.[2]
Product quality — appearance, color, odor, powder characteristics, solubility, moisture.
Quality documentation — certificate of analysis (COA), specification sheet, microbiological testing, heavy metals, pesticide residues.
Supply capability — bulk supply, minimum order quantity (MOQ), batch-to-batch consistency, customized specifications.
Independent testing — we welcome third-party lab checks; they confirm purity and potency when a COA alone is not enough.
6. Buying Ginger Extract and Ginger in Bulk
Where to Buy Ginger Extract in Bulk
You can buy from us or from a plant-extract manufacturer that provides a COA and a clear standardized specification. Before you order, we recommend you ask for a sample, a specification sheet, and a COA. Then run a small trial batch.
Bulk Ginger vs. Bulk Ginger Extract
Raw dried ginger is a food material; a standardized extract serves formulation. For a functional ingredient with a defined gingerol content, we recommend a standardized extract.
Where Does the US Get Ginger From?
For context, in 2024, China, Peru, and Brazil led US ginger imports.[5]
| Country | Quantity | Import value |
| China | ~61.2 million kg | ~$66.3 million |
| Peru | ~23.5 million kg | ~$63.7 million |
| Brazil | ~10.6 million kg | ~$23.9 million |

8. Frequently Asked Questions
| Question | Short answer |
| Where do I buy gingerol? | From a plant-extract supplier, as a standardized extract with a defined total-gingerols or 6-gingerol specification. |
| Is gingerol just ginger? | No — gingerol is a compound in ginger, not the whole plant. |
| What is the best gingerol extract? | One with a defined gingerol content, COA, and consistent quality. |
| How much gingerol is in ginger? | It varies with variety, processing, and method — specify standardization. |
| Which is better, gingerols or shogaols? | Different compounds; the right profile depends on the application. |
| What is the difference between gingerol and ginger root extract? | Gingerol is a compound; ginger root extract is the product. |
| Which country produces the best ginger? | There is no single answer; quality depends on variety and processing. |
